Saul Bass- Goodfellas

Brief synopsisHenry Hill is a small time gangster, who takes part in a robbery with Jimmy Conway and Tommy De Vito, two other gangsters who have set their sights a bit higher. His two partners kill off everyone else involved in the robbery, and slowly start to climb up through the hierarchy of the Mob. Henry, however, is badly affected by his partners success, but will he stoop low enough to bring about the downfall of Jimmy and Tommy?

The opening sequence

The first shot shown is a long shot of a back of a car, the location is dark with low key lighting apart from the headlights from the car. The low key lighting is very conventional in a thriller to connote fear and possibly referring to death.
The titles are very quick across the screen with a black background and white writing, the black again connoting fear with a contrast of white connoting innocent victims. The camera then pans round to close up of the front of a car with a man wearing a suit driving with 2 other men in the passenger seats.
They hear a noise and get out the car still with low lighting and the only light being the headlights to suggest that something may be in the boot of the car. They open the boot and see a man tied up and Jimmy stabs him. Murder is conventional  in a thriller and we know that the film will be based around this.
We can also tell these 3 main characters will be the Antagonists. 'As far back as I remember, I wanted to be a gangster' says Henry this also connotes the thriller genre as gangsters revolve around a crime. The first shots have low pitch music to fit with the thriller genre yet changes after Henry says that quote to a happier and upbeat score.
