The sub-genre determines what type of thriller it is, as there is a wide range of thriller's available.
Crime Thriller:

When a hero confrots a large powerful group of enemies, whose true extent only he recognizes

Disater Thriller:
This Type of thriller is when the main source of conflict is a natural disatser and the hero has to save the world by finding a way to prevent this disaster from getting worse or by saving as many people as possible. We are always shown the ordinary person doing his day to that route, which then follows on through the movie to show how much his life has changed through this disaster. 2012 and The Day after Tomorrow
Psychological Thriller:
A normal conflict between main characters leading to an often violent resolution. The conflict between the characters is usually mental and emotional, rather than physical. The conflict could even be something that in real life, wouldn't be scientifically possible. The Ring, Orphan And Cape Fear
Drama Thriller:
The film would normally consist of "drama" aspects mixed with the thriller aspects. The film is usually more slow paced, and involves the characters developing emotionally, psychologically and sometimes physically. This usually coincides with the plot, and with its twists and turns. The Interpreter

This is when the plot of the movie is closely connected to religous institutions, objects and questions. Can be linked to metaphysical thrillers. It is mostly novels that get turned into religous thrillers- The Da Vinci Code
Erotic Thriller:

Mix of both crime films and thriller films, and it offers a suspenseful or mysterious account of a crime - successful or failed. This type of thriller usually focus on the criminal-characters, rather than the law enforcers. Includes conflicts between some main characters. Usually one, both or all of them has super-powers, and may be considered a SuperHero or a Villain. Unbreakable
